With technology growing up leaps and bounds with the emergence of IoT, big data, and AI, they have introduced to us the hyperscale data centers. As per the recent statistic, half of the world’s data is stored and processes in these enormous and highly scalable facilities.

However, the big question is, are we going to continue with the hyperscale data center? The answer is, there are high chances that there may be about 500 of these large centers by the end of 2020. However, the industry has figured out that things would not work out if the data is centralized; hence the solution is to move towards edge data centers.

In this digital era, keeping in mind the cost-efficiency and performance, edge data centers are the one-stop solution. Most of the organizations have discovered that it is quite a task to send data long distance. It is expensive, critical and also needs some local high-capacity servers to be in place. The local we are here referring to is more secure and sensitive data not permitted to travel between countries.

Making the shift

Many organization in the US, have taken a conscious decision to address the need for proximity. The likes of DartPoints and EdgeConneX have gone ahead and build a business model based on small edge data centers. These small edge data centers will provide hosting capability for the hyperscalers. In fact, DARZ in Darmstadt, Germany is the first to go with this type of colocation data center. It has been successful in securing the hosting data at the edge of the network for three years.

Turning small

What is excellent for ADVA is that all the edge facilities need connectivity. One edge hosting model that they are aware of goes a little further. The universal customer premises equipment (uCPE) helps to develop the edge data center model on a much smaller scale. It can serve multiple customers, and this type of microdata center can turn into as little as a single server.
It will not confine itself to service provider world. Many organizations can use microdata centers. It will help the organizations to share information quickly and can even speed up the whole process.

Edge & microdata centers

Edge computing and microdata centers is a new era in the technology world. In the recent times, cloud computing has made a place for itself and the days of data consolidation has come to an end.

In the future, there will be more microdata centers, and they will reflect the edge of every company. It is the organizations that figure out how the data analysis is going to be.

There will also be a simplification of IT operating model. More private clouds will get deployed. The automation and service models will take care of maintenance of the infrastructure. It is time the organizations also work along the lines of business and projected outcomes.

So, in conclusion, Edge and microdata centers go hand in hand. They are the future and organizations should make the shift.
